Do you need a Content Management System (CMS)?

In my experience as web developer, I've come across many website and client which would have been better served with having Content Managemet System than not having one. But that does not imply that every website or online venture does not need to have one.

I also want to iterate the fact, that I'm only concentrating on websites for small to medium scale organisations. As corporate websites need much larger and broader analysis for any kind of decision.

 When do you need a Content Management System?

Rather than discussing at length I wanted to quantify all the important factors, monetory and others into one place.

I'd say if you answer yes to one or more following questions, You MAY need one?

  1. Do you update your site frequently(monthly)? , by update assume modify existing content (or) add new content.
  2. Are there multiple number authors updating your website?
  3. Does non-developers need to be able to update your website?
  4. Do you intend to change your website with staff in remote location (i.e. not from work PC without the help of any Web Authoring tool like Dreamweaver)?
  5. Are you thinking long term ? In terms of using/maintaining this web site.
  6. Are you prepared to take the extra cost in terms of instllation and support? Support and updates become 

When you do NOT need a Content Management System?

  1. Is this a one of campaign (or) Is this website a temporary?
  2. Are you planning to use Flash extensivle (i.e. Flash based navigation)?
